چکیده

RED MAN SYNDROME — The most common adverse reaction to vancomycin is "red man syndrome" (RMS), which also may be called "red neck syndrome." RMS is not thought to involve drug-specific antibodies and may develop even with the first administration of vancomycin. RMS is a form of pseudoallergic drug reaction, or an adverse drug reactions with signs and symptoms that mimic immunologic drug allergies, but in which immunologic mechanisms have not be demonstrated.

Desensitization protocols for vancomycin hypersensitivity.

OBJECTIVE To discuss the pathophysiology of vancomycin-induced immediate hypersensitivity reactions, review the process of vancomycin desensitization, and provide specific directions for ordering and preparing rapid and slow desensitization protocols. DATA SOURCES A MEDLINE search (1966-February 2001) of English-language literature pertaining to vancomycin desensitization and hypersensitivity...

Immunoglobulin E-mediated hypersensitivity reaction after intraperitoneal administration of vancomycin

Intraperitoneal (IP) vancomycin is widely used to treat Gram-positive peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis. There have been two cases of red man syndrome (RMS), a vancomycin-specific nonimmunologic reaction, associated with IP vancomycin. However, immune-mediated hypersensitivity reaction to IP vancomycin has not yet been reported. A 49 year old woman on continuous ambulatory periton...

A Case of Hypersensitivity Syndrome to Both Vancomycin and Teicoplanin

Drug hypersensitivity syndrome to both vancomycin and teicoplanin has not been previously reported. We describe here a 50-yr-old male patient with vertebral osteomyelitis and epidural abscess who developed hypersensitivity syndrome to both vancomycin and teicoplanin. Skin rash, fever, eosinophilia, interstitial pneumonitis, and interstitial nephritis developed following the administration of ea...

Vancomycin-specific T Cell responses in allergic and non-allergic individuals

Background The association between specific HLA alleles and risk of severe cutaneous drug hypersensitivity reactions is increasingly recognised. Vancomycin mediated pseudo-allergic ‘red man syndrome’ is well recognised, yet urticaria/anaphylaxis is uncommon and some clinical reactions are delayed. Although this may suggest the presence of vancomycin initiated T cell responses, no predisposing v...

A case of vancomycin-induced drug hypersensitivity syndrome

The drug hypersensitivity syndrome (DHS) is a severe, idiosyncratic multi-system reaction caused by drugs. It is defined by the clinical triad of fever, rash and internal organ involvement 1) . Vancomycin has rarely been reported as a cause of the DHS 2) . There are only a few cases of suspected DHS due to vancomycin previously reported in the medical literature 3-5) . In 1990, Hannah et al. 3)...
